Technology Autobiography

I have had mixed experiences with computers. The most frustrating thing is how quickly technology and computers develop and change. I still use math and English skill that I learned in elementary, however the computer courses I took as a Junior and Senior in High School are now completely irrelevant. It takes quite a bit of time and energy to stay on top of the current technology, let alone master it. On the other hand, if you do have the capabilities to master current and changing technology, it can be extremely useful in multiple ways.
I also believe that computers and technology can be extremely useful. Working full time and being a single father gave me very little opportunity to visit my professors during their office hours. However I could E-Mail multiple questions and drafts for feedback allowing me to reach my full potential as a student, even under adverse circumstances. Computers also have allowed me to research many topics without ever leaving my home. Computers were simply advanced typewriters when I attended high school. Now I see high school students using them as communication devices, research tools, presentation guides, and so forth. I think computers should play a central role in the classroom.
It has also been my experience that there is also a clear economic aspect of technology. As a Substitute, I can’t help but notice the discrepancy in terms of access to computers at different schools. I once worked at Western and Eastern High School on consecutive days in April 2008. Western had one broken computer in a classroom for computer Sciences. All of the classes had between 28-34 students. Eastern High School had 38 computers in an English classroom in which the top enrollment was 27.
I think technology and computers belong in the classroom. Computers are an integral part of higher level education as well as many professional careers. As a High School employee, I want my students to be prepared to be successful in college. For that preparation to be achieved, my students must reach computer fluency.
